Going, going, gone

Ok, technically our home is not sold, it's just in contract (so I hope that I'm not jinxing things), but after two days on the market, we got a bid on our house, and after a little more negotiating we are in contract. If all goes according to contract, we close on June 10th and we move out on June 20th.

I know that I should feel happy or relieved, but I would be lying if I said that tears that I shed last night were tears of joy. I'm feeling very melancholy today. It's just hard to let go and move on.

On the bright side, I guess all of this means that we won't have to move in with my parents while we try to sell our house this summer. Now we need to find a place to rent in Salt Lake. Does anyone have any advice? Larry will be working at the University of Utah Hospital and several friends have told us to look for a rental in the Avenues or Sugarhouse, then others tell us those areas are really expensive, but they don't have any other advice. Even though I lived in Provo, Utah; I haven't ever even driven in Salt Lake by myself so I'm feeling pretty clueless. I'd also love to hear any recommendations that you might have about moving companies. What companies have you used and have you been happy with them?

Congratulations! Your house is so cute I had no doubt it would sell quickly. Let me know what I can do on the Utah home search...always happy to drive and check things out in person!

That was FAST!
The avenues/foothill/sugar house areas would be the closest to the U. They are expensive areas to buy in, but I bet they have pretty reasonable rentals. Although, possibly pretty run down rentals since they are older areas and rent to students. You could also go further downtown because TRAX makes getting to the U easy. Another upside of renting in those areas is that you will be close to the Zoo, Liberty Park, and the Gateway! I bet Creed would go nuts on a train ride down to the Children's museum!

YAY!! Congrats! We are so sad that your leaving, but what great news about your house! So nice that you don't need to worry about tons of showings.

Wow, that was fast!! I was sure it would sell quickly though, with all your cute furnishings and fun colors/decorations. I'm going to be sad that you guys are leaving just as we're deciding that we're staying! :(

WOW! That was so quick! Atleast you know that you can move on without having to pay for a house that you aren't even living in anymore! That is always my fear while selling!

Told you so, told you so! Knew you'd sell it quick. I just didn't expect THAT quick. Though our condo sold in under two weeks. I'm so relieved for you, but also sad! We missed you at Shannon's cake fest yesterday - let's get together soon!

I know nothing about selling houses, renting in Salt Lake, or moving companies (except for my parents, who dutifully move me everywhere I need to go) but I'm excited for you! Congrats on selling, Steph!

Wow- that was fast, especially in this ridiculous housing market. Glad y'all already have an offer.

I love SLC and especially the Sugarhouse area. We have had several friends rent over the years and have always found very reasonable places.

Yay - I checked your blog tonight hoping to find just this news! I'm happy for you guys and while I can completely understand the mixed feelings (as I am still in denial that you're leaving), I am glad this process didn't drag out and you no longer have to worry about it.

SO, I guess my plan to black out half my teeth, drag a washer onto your neighbor's front porch and sit out there in a rocker and a granny dress after littering the neighborhood with motorcycles and abandonerd kid's toys is just too late, huh? Curses - foiled again! I'm sincerely happy for you that it has worked out well..but like Nikki in total denial that you're leaving Ohio. - sob! Mom Cat

Congrats! I'm a fan of your blog and have been feeling such a close connection lately as we are going through a relocation (Chicago to Northern Virginia) as well. I've interviewed a few of the major movers and found United Van Lines to be the most reasonably priced and well respected companies. North American was our runner up. We've used them before in moves. They are a bit for expensive, but you don't have to worry about your stuff in transit. Good luck!

I'm so glad it sold so quickly---I know you're sad, but I'm sure its going to be nice to not be worrying about selling it. I recommend ABF UPack for moving. That's who we used recently. You pay by the foot and you load and unload it which saves you a lot of money over full service moving companies, but you don't have to drive it yourself. Whatever you do, DO NOT use a Uhaul/Penske/Budget.

As far as renting in SLC--it is true that up near the U: Avenues & Sugarhouse, are great areas. Lots going on culturally and whatnot. But I agree they may be rather run down or pricey (For example my brother in law just rented his house up there out for $1400 a month and its rather small, but not shabby). One thing to consider is that if you aren't going to be downtown or right by the U you will want to be really close to I-15 or I-215. Commuting in SL is a beast unless you are near the freeway.

If you want me to go check out some rentals in SL for you let me know, I'd be more than happy to go take photos and email them back.

Phew, this is long. Okay, there you go. Hope it was helpful

Hi Steph- Congrats on the quick sell of your house.
Are you just wanting to rent or are you thinking about buying? The market is crazy right now in Salt Lake, so there are a ton of forclosures that you can pick up for really great prices. If you have any qustions about it, you and Larry are welcome to call Damion. He deals with Real Estate Investors everyday who are buying foreclosures. Just email me at rodeback6@netzero.net if you have any questions.

Congrats! What a relief. I can totally relate to the tears, I still shed some when I think of someone else living in our space. We are excited to have the Fords join the Utahns! We live in a great area that is very accessible to the U hospital. I work at Primary Children's and it takes me about 10 minutes to get to work. I will keep my eyes out for rentals in the area. The market here is so soft, that there are a lot of people renting since they couldn't sell their homes. Congrats once again. That is so great!

Congrats on selling your house so quickly! That's a relief. When we moved to Arkansas we used ABF (www.upack.com)for our move. When we relocated to Utah my husband's company used Allied for our packing & moving. We had a good experience with both of them. I hope everything goes smoothly for you!

When we moved to Salt Lake, we lived in a place near bountiful. I took the bus downtown everyday for work and it took 15 min. It as way cheaper than living in Salt Lake. If you take the first Bountiful exit (I can't remember what it is called, but it puts you out straight onto a street going north. Right after the second light (Center St. I think), there is a community of townhomes on your left called North Towne Station. They are 3 bedrooms and 2 and 1/2 bathrooms with a garage and really really nice. They are technically in North Salt Lake. There are a ton of people in the ward there that are really fun, but also a lot of people that are struggling. We really felt like we were able to help and serve in that ward and loved it. The townhomes are really cute too!

the area around 9th and 9th is cute and probably a little less expensive. also the area in between downtown and the university. (between 3rd east and 13th east... and south temple and 4th south). also around liberty park. very cute houses just west of the park. also rose park. it's just over on the west side of the 15 from downtown... but surprisingly to a lot of people, it has lower crime rates than the avenues, and has really cute little brick houses on tree lined streets full of residents who watch out for each other and have been in the area for a long time.hope that helps some.

Wow! Can we hire you to get our house ready when it's time to sell?
Our bro and sis in law are moving from a rental house near foothill this summer. I think it's pretty reasonable. He works at the Univ hospital.

Steph,

CONGRATULATIONS! I am sure it feels so good to have the house sold (and so quick!), but I remember the mixed emotions of moving from a home filled with memories, even if the next chapter is exciting too.

Chad works at Primary Childrens and the U and we live in the Sugarhouse area. I'll keep my eye out for some rentals, when are you guys planning on arriving and what kind of space are you interested in? We are so happy and excited for you!
